We arrived in France on schedule on Monday 25 August. We had booked a rental car to be picked up at Charles de Gaulle and were entrusted with a nice newish Peugeot. Now there is one thing that I don't really like about the French and that is the way they drive, especially when in Paris. Never mind we have TomTom to make life easy, at least there will be more worries about navigating. Wrong! Plug TomTom in, it no worky. Rebooted , waited and waited some more, still it no worky. Oh well the man at the rental place said "It is easy" . Yeh right! Still we made it and before long had found our way into the motorway heading west. Now TomTom decided was a good time to start working.
We had booked a cottage in Pont Audemer in Normandy so had a wee way to go but made it in good time and were able to enjoy a cup of coffee before booking in.
Pont Audemer Main Street
This scene was to become familiar to us over the next week as we made a habit of taking our coffee here each morning.
The River in Pont Audemer.
Our house is along on the left with a pink balcony
The Cottage Was Very Nice....but
Booking in was an experience in it's own right as the owner was unable to be there, so mum had been sent instead. Now my French is not the best, in fact it is awful, but it beat mum's English and so the explanation of setting up Wifi hotspots etc went on and on. The cottage itself had character to spare, but it also had it's drawbacks, like the toilet and shower were actually in the bedroom and the kitchen lacked the space that Mrs Currin has come to take for granted.
Main Street Pont Audemer with church.,
As noted, we became very accustomed to taking our coffee in the main street each morning and this was just across from the church Around every orifice in the church were pockmarks which were the obvious result of there having been snipers there during the invasion who were in turn given a very uncomfortable time of it by the invading forces.
The Marks of War
From this central location we were able to explore the surrounding area over the next week and very enjoyable it became.
I shall try and get some more done tomorrow, so until then.....
All the best and GO the Makos
David
